Jungheinrich, a global leader in materials handling equipment and warehouse solutions, wanted to ensure their apprentices had more than just technical sales skills. They needed a programme that would build confidence, communication skills, and a growth mindset – developing well-rounded, values-driven professionals who could excel in a fast-paced, digital-first sales environment.
Victoria Burston, Head of L&D UK, shares how the Level 4 Sales Executive Apprenticeship from BMS Progress has helped lay strong foundations for both professional and personal development, aligned to Jungheinrich’s culture and evolving business needs.
In her role leading Learning and Development, Victoria works closely with apprentices and newly promoted leaders, many of whom face challenges around confidence, communication, and mindset. The aim was to find a programme that would not just develop technical sales skills, but also address behavioural and cultural expectations, improve self-awareness, and encourage a growth mindset that reflects today’s world of work.
“Our goal was to create a more confident, capable, and values-driven workforce that could thrive in a fast-paced operational environment.”
The partnership aimed to help apprentices grow into confident, credible professionals who can represent the Jungheinrich brand effectively. This meant improving communication, customer relationship management, and commercial awareness, while building resilience, accountability, and a proactive approach to learning and performance.
BMS Progress stood out to Jungheinrich due to our structured yet flexible approach, focus on applied learning, alongside our deep understanding of the challenges in real sales environments. Our personalised and practical delivery, combined with strong communication and a collaborative spirit, aligned closely with both Jungheinrich’s business needs and learner expectations. Our shared values of straightforward communication, professionalism, and staying “above the curve” made us the natural choice.
The programme was adapted to support Jungheinrich’s shift from traditional materials handling equipment towards more digital, fast-paced solutions. As the business evolves, so too do expectations for apprentices to adapt quickly to changing customer demands and technological advancements. The apprenticeship equips learners not only with sales skills but also with an understanding of how to drive innovation, meet evolving customer needs, and contribute to sustainability goals.
BMS Progress worked closely with Jungheinrich’s internal learning and training team to blend the apprenticeship content with existing learning blocks. This ensured full alignment with internal processes and business priorities, creating a seamless learning journey.
“The collaborative approach meant the programme didn’t just run alongside our existing training – it became part of it. That made the learning far more relevant and impactful for our apprentices.”
"What stood out most was the professionalism and level of skill exhibited by staff. Their expertise not only ensured high-quality delivery but also demonstrated a strong commitment to leading by example. The team’s ability to communicate clearly, provide ongoing support, and adapt their coaching to the needs of our apprentices was invaluable. Their dedication to the programme and ability to inspire confidence in our apprentices really made a difference and reinforced the standard of excellence we strive for within our own business."
With the first apprentice now approaching End Point Assessment, measurable results are still emerging – but early indicators are positive. Just three months into the programme, two apprentices received exceptional feedback from their Regional Head of Sales and Business Director for their presentation skills, a significant achievement so early on.
The apprenticeship has helped apprentices think more broadly and strategically, encouraging a more solution-oriented mindset. This change is especially noticeable in younger team members, who are now approaching challenges with greater thought and taking more responsibility.
This mindset shift is already having a positive business impact – building a culture of proactive problem-solving and innovation, and helping to build the leadership pipeline for the future.
The experience has reinforced Jungheinrich’s commitment to attracting the best talent and providing the best training. The forward-thinking, personalised approach from BMS aligns perfectly with Jungheinrich’s values and will continue to influence future training strategy.
