Helping salespeople put knowledge into practice

Beam Group, the UK’s only exclusive distributor of premium small domestic appliance, floorcare and air treatment products, looked to our Level 4 Sales Executive Apprenticeship to give their sales team the skills to progress.

Beam Group

Since 1985, Beam Group has been a leading brand management and distribution business, specialising in premium brands for the small domestic appliance, air treatment, and floorcare categories. To them, sales are core – so they sought the help of BMS Progress.

In this case study, Sales Apprentice Matt Ladell discusses his personal experience on the Level 4 Sales Apprenticeship with BMS Progress. Plus, Adam Wootton shares his insights as Matt’s Development Coach.

“It was a pleasure to guide Matt through his learning journey and see him achieve a distinction. Matt started his apprenticeship with a growth mindset towards CPD, which over time became a huge asset, as we navigated challenges presented by the pandemic and celebrated some truly great learning wins. I believe creating a connection with apprentices is important and I had the privilege of getting to know Matt well. It was through this bond that I was able to stretch and challenge Matt, and tailor his learning plan to help condition him to work at distinction potential.”

BMS Progress - The challenge

The Objectives

I was going into a new position as an Account Manager, so it seemed worthwhile to undertake the apprenticeship as part of the transition.

Understand a new role

My aim was to discover the best practices within this fresh area, and how to maximise on the opportunity.

Move towards progression

Continuous professional development is very important to me, and doing the apprenticeship would help with my growth and progression in sales.

BMS Progress - The solution

The Solution

I started the apprenticeship in July 2019 and finished in March 2021. It was a really positive experience, and I gained a lot from it.

Applying theory

The course focused on case studies, which suited me down to the ground. I have an educational background, so I find it beneficial to write about situations in detail and link theories to applications.

Valuable evaluations

Assessing and reflecting on what I’d done was really powerful. Usually, you don’t have the chance to ask ‘could I have done that better or used my time more effectively?’ – but the apprenticeship gave me that opportunity.

Fantastic support

Adam, my Development Coach, helped to steer me in the right direction. He was a shoulder to bounce ideas off, and he genuinely cared about my progression, goals and support needs – both professional and personal.

BMS Progress - The result

The Result

BMS Progress is incredibly committed to supporting their learners and maximising their opportunities.

A different way of thinking

I’ve learnt a fresh approach to how I direct questions at myself and others. I know how to take the emotion out of issues, identify the facts and get to the root cause.

Going above and beyond

The apprenticeship made me look outside my role. I’m now involved in more projects within the wider business, and am making headway with personal development plans. I can align with the company vision to have a greater impact.

Sales successes

I’ve been able to take on and manage larger accounts – plus maximise what I can achieve with them. I’m seizing new responsibilities, bringing in over 1.5 times more turnover, and I’m in good stead to move up within the business.
