Giving salespeople the tools to succeed

Leading distributor of catering disposables, food packaging and hygiene products, Bunzl Catering Supplies, looked to BMS Progress to help them qualify their team for advancement. Our Level 4 Sales Executive Apprenticeship was the perfect solution.

Bunzl

Bunzl is a global business with various operations, including their catering and hospitality division. They source supplies and products for organisations such as Hilton Hotels, McCarthy & Stone, and Sodexo, so they can focus on their core business.

Their senior national account manager, Sophy Cox, explored training for two members of her team, as part of a larger Bunzl cohort. In this case study, she shares why the level 4 sales executive apprenticeship standard proved to be worth its weight in gold.

"The support provided by the development coach, Sarah Jones, was really valuable. It’s been fantastic to see my team grow in confidence, and level up through the Level 4 Sales Executive Apprenticeship Standard."

BMS Progress - The challenge

The Objectives

The Bunzl Catering hospitality division had already decided to partner with BMS Progress as a training provider as they had successfully delivered two cohorts. This was valuable, as I wanted to give two of my team the opportunity to undertake the level 4 Sales Executive Apprenticeship.

Invest in people’s progression

Our ultimate goal was to give individuals an absolute foundation for progression in the business, so they could advance in their roles in the future.

Equip them with the right skill set

I wanted the team members on the apprenticeship to have the right tools and skills to move up into positions like national account manager.

BMS Progress - The solution

The Solution

Our relationship with BMS Progress got off to a positive start. They provided assurance around support in particular, which I think is key, as the apprentice is the most important person, so you need to work hard to support them.

Smooth onboarding

BMS Progress met with the apprentices immediately and talked them through the process to ensure it was right for them. If they didn’t have the right pre-qualifications, they discussed ways they could gain them alongside doing the apprenticeship.

Proper support

The development coach, Sarah Jones, ensured that my apprentices were properly supported throughout the process. They had regular review meetings which were very collaborative and allowed apprentices to feed back too. Plus, they knew they could pick up the phone to speak to Sarah anytime for additional support.

BMS Progress - The result

The Result

There’s definitely been a ROI from the course. It’s also been an effective use of the apprenticeship levy – and these weren’t the only benefits.

Brought individuals out of their comfort zone

The apprentices said the programme was challenging – but it’s meant to be. The whole point of learning is to bring people out of their comfort zone, and the course has definitely done that.

Boosted confidence

I’ve noticed higher confidence levels in both my team members. One understands time management and prioritisation better, and is more confident in general. The other is able to network with different people in the business who they wouldn’t have spoken to previously.

Improved performance

In completing the course, both team members have bettered their performance, which will help them to level up in the company. There are many examples of people within the wider businesses advancing through BMS Progress’ training, and I’m sure my apprentices will follow suit.
