Buildbase

Buildbase is the business to turn to for any building materials, timber, or DIY needs. Their focus is on helping their customers – whether they’re local tradespeople or individuals in their communities – get the job done. In 2018, Buildbase’s HR Business Partner, Adrian Rowley, explored training opportunities.

He was recommended BMS Progress by the chair of the trailblazer group who wrote the apprenticeship standards.

BMS Progress - The challenge

The Objectives

We started up a conversation with BMS Progress with the aim of finding a training partner who could help us reach our goals – all centred around development and gaining an impressive ROI.

To upskill our team

As part of our long-term training and development strategy, we wanted to upskill our sales team – specifically through a professionally recognised qualification.

To utilise our levy funds

As a large organisation, we had already contributed quite a substantial amount of money to the apprenticeship levy, and wished to use this effectively.

We had been recommended another apprenticeship provider as well, but after I spoke to Managing Director David Bill, it was easy to see us working with BMS Progress. He wasn’t pushy at all, and we hit things off straight away. What’s more, he gave me assurance on their solutions.

BMS Progress worked with us very closely from the start, ensuring we had the right people on the right programme. Feedback from learners has been incredibly positive as a result, particularly when it comes to the workshops – even when they’re delivered online.

Some of our learners have gone on to be promoted. The qualification proved to unlock their skills and potential, and helped them achieve this next step in their career.

The development coaches have been brilliant – they’ve helped learners stick to deadlines, whilst still ensuring the work is done to a very high standard. They’ve been hugely supportive too.

The programme has really helped to increase engagement among our team, which we think is all down to investing in their training and development. As a result, we’ve seen a huge ROI.

Effective use of the levy

It’s great that we’ve been able to put our levy pot to good use, and not just for the sake of it. Through BMS Progress, we’ve got the very best use out of it.
