We want to keep you informed about some key updates to the apprenticeship funding rules coming into effect from 1st August 2025. These changes are designed to simplify processes, clarify responsibilities, and ensure funding is focused where it can make the most impact. As these rules form part of the contractual obligations for both employers and training providers, it's essential to be clear on both the existing requirements and the updates.

Please be aware that:

  • The rules only apply to apprentices starting from the 1st August 2025.
  • There are often further clarifications and minor changes throughout the academic year, so there may be updates to the rules.

Here's what you need to know:

Initial Assessments

  • Apprentices aged 16–24 will be asked if they’re eligible for the £3,000 care leavers’ bursary, so support can be offered from the start. This question will be asked during the onboarding phase of their programme.

English and Maths Requirements

  • If, at the start of their programme, an apprentice is aged 16-18, English and/or maths is mandatory if they haven’t already achieved a suitable qualification.
  • For 19+ apprentices, employers and apprentices can choose whether they take standalone English/maths qualifications, however, the final decision lies with the employer.
  • New Requirement: Apprentices studying English and/or maths must actively engage with learning monthly, in line with their training plan. This is separate from off-the-job training requirements.

Off-the-Job (OTJ) Training & Minimum Duration

  • Each apprenticeship standard will now have a published minimum number of OTJ training hours (replacing a minimum of 6 hours per week).
  • From August 2025, all programme durations must be a minimum of 8 months (reduced from 12 months in previous funding rules), provided any prior learning has been factored in.
  • Programme durations no longer need to be extended for apprentices working less than 30 hours per week. Instead, we’ll work with you to agree a realistic programme length.
